Research Interests

Novel ultrasound transducer and system for biomedical imaging and therapy

1) High Resolution Ultrasound Imaging Transducer and System

High-resolution ultrasound imaging, especially ultra-high-frequency ultrasound technology, is an indispensable non-invasive observational tool in biomedical research. It enables in vivo, real-time acquisition of fine structural and hemodynamic information of the heart, blood vessels, and organ tissues, providing crucial support for disease mechanism elucidation, drug screening, and therapeutic efficacy evaluation. Our group focuses on the research and development of core components and complete systems, establishing a complete R&D chain from transducers to instruments. The team’s progress in the development of high-resolution ultrasound imaging technology and equipment is as follows: (a) high-performance ultrasound transducers; (b) B-mode cardiac imaging in small animals; (c) renal blood flow imaging in rats; (d) pulsed-wave Doppler cardiac imaging in mice; (e) novel ultra-high-frequency ultrasound instruments and equipment.

2) Research on Novel Functional Ultrasound and Super-Resolution Ultrasound Imaging Technology

Functional ultrasound imaging and super-resolution ultrasound imaging represent the most groundbreaking frontiers in biomedical ultrasound in recent years. Functional ultrasound maps neural activity by detecting cerebral blood flow changes, providing a non-invasive observational tool with high sensitivity and a large field of view for brain science research. Super-resolution ultrasound imaging, by breaking through the diffraction limit, enables microvascular structural analysis at the micron scale, ushering ultrasound diagnostics into a new era of cellular-level imaging. The combination of these two modalities can reveal tissue physiological and pathological states from both functional and structural dimensions. Our group has carried out systematic research in these directions, covering functional brain imaging, multi-organ super-resolution imaging, and three-dimensional dynamic blood flow reconstruction, aiming to advance ultrasound technology from macroscopic observation toward microscopic functional analysis. Work conducted by the group includes: (a) functional ultrasound brain imaging technology; (b–d) super-resolution ultrasound imaging of the liver, endometrium, and brain; (e) three-dimensional super-resolution ultrasound imaging of cerebral blood flow.

3) High-Resolution Endoscopic Ultrasound Imaging Methods and Systems

Cardiovascular diseases and gastrointestinal diseases are major threats to human health, and precise endoluminal imaging tools are critically important for early diagnosis and interventional treatment. With the rapid advancement of micro-nano manufacturing and high-frequency ultrasound technology, interventional ultrasound imaging is evolving toward miniaturization, higher frequencies, and array-based designs, enabling it to overcome the depth and resolution limitations of conventional external ultrasound. This provides unprecedented tissue detail for intravascular, intracardiac, and gastrointestinal endoscopic imaging. Our group has achieved a series of original research outcomes in this field and has successfully translated them into industrial applications, making breakthroughs in key technologies such as the design, packaging, and system integration of high-performance miniature ultrasound transducers, thereby filling gaps in related products. Aiming at cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases, we provide high-resolution endoscopic ultrasound imaging methods and devices. The key interventional ultrasound imaging technologies that the team has developed and translated into products include: (a–c) sub-millimeter ultra-high-frequency ultrasound transducers capable of entering blood vessels for high-resolution tissue imaging; (d–f) miniature high-frequency array ultrasound transducers capable of entering the heart for high-resolution imaging to assist in guiding cardiac surgery; (g–h) capsule ultrasound imaging technology that can acquire high-resolution intestinal tissue images, clearly visualizing the multi-layered structure of the intestinal wall.

4) Non-Invasive Ultrasound Therapy Technology and Instrument Development

Non-invasive ultrasound therapy technology is rapidly advancing toward precision, intelligence, and multimodal integration, and has emerged as a research frontier in areas such as neuromodulation, safe opening of the blood-brain barrier, and targeted drug delivery. At the same time, brain-computer interface technology is evolving from unidirectional neural signal readout toward bidirectional "read-write" interaction. The use of focused ultrasound to achieve non-invasive, high-spatial-resolution neural information writing offers a transformative tool for next-generation brain-computer integrated systems. Our group focuses on key technologies for non-invasive ultrasound therapy and ultrasound-based brain-computer interface writing, systematically conducting research and development on core components, algorithms, and instruments. The goal is to establish a comprehensive technical system spanning from portable therapeutic devices to large-scale array manipulation, thereby advancing the practical application of ultrasound neuromodulation and brain-computer interface writing technology. (a) Portable ultrasound therapy device; (b) array-based ultrasound therapy system modules; (c) research on dual-mode imaging and therapy array ultrasound transducer technology; (d) MRI-compatible array system; (e) kilo-element ultrasound manipulation system; (f) prototype of large-scale array ultrasound therapy system.
