Research Areas
Engaged in long-term research on ultra-intense ultra-short lasers, he has served as a core member in China's first high-energy petawatt laser (SGII-PW), the world's first 10-petawatt laser (SULF), the world's highest-energy petawatt laser (LFEX), the Japan's next-generation ultra-intense laser (J-EPoCH), and now the world's first 50-100 petawatt laser (SEL). Several original innovative technologies he proposed (such as high-order dispersion control, parametric fluorescence suppression, and object-image grating self-tiling etc.) have been implemented in large-scale engineering applications in renowned petawatt and 10-petawatt laser facilities in China, Japan, and Europe. Currently, addressing the development challenges of ultra-intense ultra-short lasers in the "post-10-petawatt era," he is exploring technical pathways to achieve 1000-petawatt (exawatt) lasers.
He is a National, Shanghai and Chinese Academy of Sciences Distinguished Expert, a Lifetime Senior Member of the Chinese Optical Society, and a Senior Member of The Optica (formly OSA). He serves as an Associate Editor for the OSA journal Optics Express, and Session Chair/Committee Member for international academic conferences such as SPIE, CLEO, and OPIC. Previously, he held positions as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor (April 1, 2016) and Tenure Assistant Professor (April 1, 2018) at the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University, Japan.
His awards include the 2023 China's Top 10 Optical Breakthroughs (as a collaborator) for his contribution to the development of 400nm ultra-broadband pulse compression gratings, the 2023 Japan Laser Society Award for Achievement (ranked 4th out of 12 participants) for his involvement in next-generation high-repetition-rate high-energy lasers, the 2020 Osaka University Award (individual award) for proposing the WNOPCPA technology, the 2020 Kondo Prize (Osaka University International Award, individual award) for elucidating complex spatiotemporal coupling in ultra-intense ultra-short lasers, and the 2010 China's Top 10 Optical Breakthroughs (ranked 1st out of 4 participants) for inventing the object-image grating self-tiling technology. He has published over 50 papers in journals such as Nature Communications, Laser & Photonics Reviews, Communications Physics, Optics Express, and Optics Letters, with nearly 40 as first author.
